Objective: You’re on this website at this very moment! I wanted a bespoke website and the best way to do that is by building it myself. The objective was to create a nontraditional site, to serve as my online portfolio, with a minimal UI.
Approach: I wanted the UI to be super minimal, so no header and footer. I wanted the portfolio to be like this so the focus would be completely on the visuals, without any distractions from a standard header and footer. There are multiple other ways to handle that, but this particular layout was calling my name.
I used the right margin space, or “gutter”, as a sidebar to house some necessary navigation. There’s a hamburger menu – so you can get to any page at any time, a home icon that’s always displayed in the center of the viewport and a “back to top” arrow at the very bottom.
Results: Website completed and I’m very satisfied with how it turned out. The home page consists of a filter based on project categories, a modal that houses my resume, a simple contact form and a link to my LinkedIn profile. Those buttons are housed in a sticky positioned container in the left column that also contains my name and professional title.
